Face it, a bachelor’s degree is not an option for everyone. And even if that’s your goal, it may not be possible right now. But you can work toward that end or decide on a shorter path toward a diploma — certification.
The diploma landscape looks a lot different today. There are hundreds of ways to shorten the time and money it takes to earn a piece of paper validating your brain. Maybe you need a short-term program to boost your chances of getting a job. Maybe you want to start building toward a bachelor’s degree. Whatever your goals, certification is a building block for reaching them.
“I eventually want to get a bachelor’s degree,” said Linda Gonzales, an Army wife. “But we have two kids, we’re moving in November, and I have to start somewhere. I decided to begin with A+ certification in computers.”
An A+ certificate is an entry-level computer certification program and a starting point for those interested in becoming network or system administrators.
“Individuals who already have experience with computer repairs and networking issues may be ready to take the test without any formal training,” said Steve Ostrowski of the Computing Technology Industry Association. “Classes offered by commercial training providers typically last a few weeks or more intensive ‘boot camps’ can be completed in a few days.”
Linda plans to earn her certification through a computer training center — an investment of about $200. Self-study guides cost less than $100. But Linda wants the personalized training. Once she’s earned it, Linda can work in technical support positions and add to her knowledge in her own time.
It’s only smart to look at both what you want to do and what you’ve done in the past. If you have prior college credits or training in a particular field, you can often bypass requirements and earn certification faster. On the other hand, if you are trained in computers but you see yourself in health care, go for the field in which you truly want to work.
