This is our first military move across country - does the military pay to transfer one car across country ? From Washington to Virginia? We always thought they paid for one car - is this true? WE would appreciate any information on this topic.

Thanks
Janine

We are planning on driving our truck across country and tow RV when our house sells - in the meantime I want to send our car to my hubby so he can have some transport to look around the area - he has already moved and is living on the ship in norfolk

As a rule, no they do NOT pay to ship a car across country. There is an exception but I'm not 100% familiar with it since we've never qualified for it. Hopefully the JFTR guru (*cough*dawn*cough*) will pop in and let you know what it is.

But I would not count on them shipping a car for you.

CONUS to OCONUS or vice versa is usually the only time the military will pay for the shipment of 1 vehicle. The exception I know in which the military will pay for shipping a vehicle across the US is if it is cheaper to ship it than for you to drive it and get MALT & Per Diem. Otherwise you will pay out of pocket for it.  Wait there was one other time that I know of and that is when a carrier was doing a home port change then they would store vehicles on the carrier for the movement.  This was only though on the West Coast when it would be from Bremerton or Everett to San Diego and vice versa.  They might have allowed it if the carrier was going back east for major refit (Carl Vinson comes to mind and i know there is another one coming soon to do that) and the AD member had to be with the ship leaving only 1 driver to do it.

NO they dont however they do pay you per diem for gas for the vehicle. I am shipping my car from California to Va and its almost as cheap as driving it with the gas prices the way they are. It is about $1000 for a med size car. Hope this helps

the simple answer is no they do not pay to ship your car conus to conus-- HOWEVER there is a very little known rule that will allow you to be reimbursed for part of the shipping costs-
you have to set it pay for and then apply for reimbursement;
the reimbursement is based on the difference between concurrent and non-conncurrent travel:

here is the info from the JFTR:
